The Art of Processing: Why I Paint in Layers
There’s a moment that happens every time I step into my studio — a quiet shift from the outside world into a space where I can breathe a little deeper. Before the first brushstroke, before the color, before the texture, I begin each piece with something unseen: words, intentions, and the need to process whatever life is asking of me.
Painting became my way of navigating the beautiful, complicated parts of being human.
It’s how I move through transitions, grief, joy, uncertainty, hope — all the things that don’t always fit neatly into sentences. And over time, I realized that each painting holds far more than paint. It carries the emotional layers I work through along the way.
Why Layers Matter
My process is built on layers — veils of color, sanding back, adding texture, softening edges, letting metallics glow through. Every layer represents a moment: a thought, a release, a shift in energy. Some layers stay visible; others are covered completely. All of them matter.
That’s the part people rarely see:
The messy, beautiful conversation happening beneath the surface.
Painting reminds me that we’re not defined by one moment or one story. We’re shaped by the layers we’ve lived — the ones that shimmer with joy and the ones we sand back to soften. Each layer builds depth, complexity, character. Each one teaches me something.
Creating as a Way of Moving Forward
When life feels heavy or uncertain, the canvas becomes a place to process what I can’t always say out loud. The rhythm of sanding, the fluid motion of paint moving across the surface, the surprise of color mixing in ways I didn’t expect — all of it becomes a way through.
Some paintings arrive easily.
Others ask me to sit with them longer.
But every single piece teaches me to trust the process — not only in art, but in myself.
The Beauty Beneath the Surface
People often tell me they feel something when they look at my paintings — a sense of calm, energy, movement, or light. I think that’s because the work is layered with intention from the very beginning. What I feel while creating somehow finds its way through the surface, even when the underlying words and marks remain unseen.
That’s the magic of intuitive painting:
It becomes a mirror, reflecting not just color, but emotion. Not just texture, but transformation.
A Continual Unfolding
As I grow, my art grows with me.
Each new series becomes its own chapter — another invitation to step into the in-between spaces of life, to explore what’s shifting, and to let creativity guide me.
Painting has always been more than art for me.
It’s a way of understanding myself.
A way of healing.
And every time a piece makes its way into someone’s home, it carries a little of that journey with it — a quiet reminder that light always finds its way through the layers.
A way of returning to joy.
